Free Speech divides the masses

09Mar09

If you want to split the readership of a newspaper or magazine right down the middle — half writing letters to the editor in favour and half against a story — make sure you write a story about free speech.

Recently, I did that. And it appeared in Capital Xtra and on xtra.ca. The story is headlined “Can we talk? Notes from Canada’s free speech front line” and it explores the (in)ability of pro-life groups and pro-Palestinian groups, among others, to express their thoughts on campuses across Canada.

Schools in focus: University of Calgary, Carleton University, University of Ottawa

Groups in focus: Life Choice (@ Guelph), the Central Student Association (@ Guelph), Campus Pro-Life and the Genocide Awareness Project (@ Calgary), Queers on Campus (@ Calgary), the Carleton University Students’ Association, the Canadian Civil Liberties Association, Solidarity for Palestinian Human Rights (@ Ottawa) …
