Quietly taking the bench

The year is young, but this is so far one of its most under-reported stories. The Tory machine timed brilliantly the appointment of new Supreme Court justice Thomas Cromwell, but is the media honeymoon coming to an end?

There are still a few weeks until the Big Budget Day, and everyone in Political Ottawa seems to have tired of endless columns about senate appointments and governing coalitions. Maybe another of Harper’s perceived broken promises will get more light.

This is pretty strong language from Canwest:

Two legal scholars lambasted the prime minister for walking away from plans to include MPs in selecting the newest member of the high court and to hold a public hearing to give Canadians a glimpse of Cromwell before he was elevated to one of the most influential judicial posts in the country.
