Breaking News: NDP talking to people

Something largely ignored by national reporters in the last few days (and when it’s not, has been buried) is NDP leader Jack Layton’s trip across Canada to hear from Everyday Canadians in town-hall meetings. The topic: The Economy.

A lot of people — most Canadians, even — think the federal NDP would bankrupt the country. That might be fair criticism. But whatever the merits of the NDP’s plans to stimulate the economy during these Times of Economic Uncertainty, the party ought to get some credit for doing something that tends normally to get only lip service from the  federal parties.

While Liberals are meeting with Conservatives today to talk about the budget apparently on behalf of normal folks, Layton is on the road. It’s great optics, if nothing else. Or it would be if it received much attention.

Consulting people in their home towns. What a concept.
